5 Aspects to Consider at the Start of Your Web Project

Today, the largest corporations to the smallest businesses have websites but not many people realise that having an online presence isn’t just about getting a Web designer to design a website for you and adding some information to it, about your company. If you want your site to be a reflection of your brand and company, and boost your revenue, you would have to consider a number of different aspects right at the start of your web project.

Important considerations

These things will have to be thought through carefully and then communicated clearly to your web designer. The different things you should be taking into consideration are:

#1 Purpose

This may seem like a simple enough factor but you would need to decide whether you want a brand new website or want to redesign your existing one. A site can serve various purposes, such as:

  • Be an information hub about various products/services that your business offers
  • Lead generation & sales for your business
  • Provide existing customers more information about your products and services
  • Sell services & products online and this would mean you need an e-commerce site

There are other reasons why people want a business website and the idea is to nail down exactly what that purpose is. This will help you build a much better website.

#2 Domain Name

You would need to decide what the domain name of your site is going to be. This may seem like a straightforward task, but it’s more complex than most people think. Most common domain names are already used up and you might just have to settle for some sort of variation. There are domain name search tools and you can use those to search for a name. You should look for something that describes your business and tells search engines what your business deals in. This is because search engines look for the specific keywords in your web address.

#3 Target Audience

Always keep in view who your primary customers are and where they live as well as other demographics such as age and sex. Doing this early in the process is a good way to take better decisions about things like the tone of the content, the appearance and theme of the website, the colours you use etc.

#4 Competition

Before you set up your website or revamp your existing one, it’s important that you check what all your competitors are doing; and this will give you an idea about the things they are doing better than you and the aspects they are falling back on. You should also check which phrases and keywords they are targeting as this will help you structure your own SEO strategy.

#5 Design

You have to think about what image you want your business website to convey to the visitors- whether it’s meant to be very professional looking or should it have a playful vibe? Think about the colours you are going to use in your site.

The one way to help your designer get a clearer idea about what your design preferences are, is to give them a list of a handful of sites that you really like and tell them what aspects you like about them.

Creating a framework

As you can see, there are really a number of things you would have to think about right at the start of the Web project. This will give the entire process some solid framework and your designer would be able to create a design that works perfectly for you and your business.
